Throwback to 2022

In 2022, Gelato saw massive adoption by leading web3 projects like MakerDAO and Optimism, capturing 78% of the decentralized smart contract automation market. Over 4 million transactions were executed by more than 3,000 unique addresses, proving the need for a decentralized backend for web3.

Despite market downturns, Gelato remained well-capitalized, with usage continuing to grow, setting a clear path to decentralization and sustainability.

Heading into 2023, even more exciting advancements are on the horizon.

Our Mission for 2023

Web3 still has hurdles before mass adoption, including:

Complicated onboarding — users must buy crypto, create wallets, and secure seed phrases before interacting with apps.
Blockchains’ isolation from the rest of the internet — deterministic by design, incompatible with the dynamic web.
Projects compromising decentralization for usability.

Gelato’s mission as web3’s decentralized backend is to accelerate adoption and democratize the web. Web3 Functions

Web3 Functions (formerly Off-Chain Resolvers) let developers augment smart contracts with off-chain data and computation. Like running AWS Lambda for web3, but decentralized.

Fetch data from subgraphs (e.g. Opensea, Aave, Uniswap)
Integrate trading data providers (Coingecko, Coinmarketcap)
Connect to self-hosted databases or IPFS
Read state from other blockchains

Gasless Wallet SDK

The Gasless Wallet SDK makes onboarding billions possible with web2-like simplicity. Features include:

Smart contract wallet (via Safe)

Social logins (Google, Facebook)
Credit card payments for NFTs & DeFi
In-wallet automation

By combining a decentralized relay, Safe wallet, and onboarding flows, we enable Account Abstraction natively. This eliminates the need for users to manage gas, seed phrases, or clunky wallets.

$GEL Staking v0.1 & Network Decentralization

2023 marks the start of $GEL staking for node operators. Operators stake to provide computation and transaction execution, earning service fees in stablecoins and ETH. The more $GEL staked, the greater the share of network revenue.

Malicious operators face slashing, ensuring security and reliability. While the Gelato DAO will whitelist operators initially, the ultimate goal is permissionless staking and stake delegation, allowing all $GEL holders to participate. Staking v0.1 launches in H1 2023.
