Hello Gelato Fam!
In 2023 we started the year with a clear mission: to accelerate the adoption of Web3 and, with it, drive the democratization of the internet. To achieve this, we are building core Web3 infrastructure that enables developers to create augmented smart contracts that are automated, gasless, and off-chain aware without sacrificing decentralization and censorship resistance.
As we reach the halfway point of the year, it's time to reflect on our progress and achievements. Our roadmap for H1 2023 focused on cementing Gelato as Web3’s core decentralized backend by driving utility, usability, and user experience.
TL;DR
Even though most Web3 projects such as DeFi protocols and NFT marketplaces saw a slowdown in usage during H1 2023, Gelato continued to grow with integrations from leading projects like Zora, GnosisPay, and Balancer. With over 5.5 million transactions executed and more than 8.5k unique addresses using Gelato, the need for decentralized Web3 backend services is clearer than ever.
We launched Web3 Functions to set a new usability standard, enabling developers to augment smart contracts with off-chain data and computation without servers. We enhanced user experience with web2-like UX through our Relay Kit powering the Safe Account Abstraction SDK, enabling use cases like Crypto Debit Cards from Gnosis Pay.
$GEL utility was strengthened with institutional staking, advancing decentralization and performance, while core services like Automate, Relay, and 1Balance saw key upgrades.
Product Roundup H1 2023
Gelato's Web3 Functions & Automate
Our private beta of Web3 Functions V1 went live in February. It empowers developers to connect real-world APIs to Web3, apply custom logic, and securely push off-chain data on-chain in minutes.
Wider Network Support: Expanded to Ethereum mainnet, Goerli, Arbitrum, Avalanche, Base Goerli, BNB Chains, Fantom, Linea, Optimism, Polygon, Polygon Mumbai, and zkSync Era.
Smart Contract Task Creation: Since March, developers can create Web3 Function tasks programmatically via smart contracts (docs).
Task Watchlist: New UI feature enabling teams to monitor tasks not tied to their own address.
The Launch of Web3 Functions Beta 2.0
Web3 Functions Beta v2: Released in May with multichain RPC provider, batch execute calls, enhanced access control, Hardhat plugin support, config file separation, and stronger audits (migration guide).
Meta Web3 Functions: Functions can now spawn/manage other functions (docs).
Task Monitoring API: From June, developers can monitor task status via API.
Higher Resource Plans: Subscription tiers with higher run and resource limits.
Private Web3 Functions: Import private code at runtime from private repos/APIs for enhanced privacy (docs).
Gelato Relay
Relay enables robust, scalable gasless transactions via a simple API.
Expanded Network Support: Added Chiado, Base Goerli, Linea Goerli, Polygon zkEVM, and zkSync Era.
Safe-Enabled Transactions: Added support for Safe wallets in June.
Pro Tier: Introduced high rate-limit tier for high-throughput applications.
Gelato 1Balance
1Balance is a unified multi-chain payments system for dApps to simplify covering costs across networks.
Web3 Functions Support: Payment rails expanded from Relay to Web3 Functions.
Transaction History: Released in May, includes filtering/exporting across networks.
1Balance Alerts: Real-time fund threshold alerts via Discord/Telegram (docs).
Account Abstraction with Safe
In June, Gelato partnered with Safe to launch the Account Abstraction SDK. It combines Gelato's gasless transaction infra with Safe's secure smart contract wallet. All Relay methods and 1Balance sponsorship are supported.
Gelato 1Balance: Execute prepaid transactions across chains.
Gelato SyncFee: Pay transaction fees directly from Safe funds.
With this, Gelato deprecated the Gasless Wallet.
$GEL Staking v0.1 & Network Decentralization
In H1 we took the first step toward network decentralization, with DAO-approved node operators: Bware Labs, Chorus One, P2P, Staking Facilities, and Gelato Digital GmbH. This cohort secures the network, improving decentralization and reliability. Staking Economics V1 sets the foundation for a robust operator economy tied to Gelato’s growth.
H2 & Beyond
That wraps up the highlights of our H1 Product Roadmap! We’ve got much more coming in H2 and beyond. Be sure to subscribe to our newsletter and follow Twitter for updates.
