Gelato & Safe are bringing Account Abstraction to Coinbase’s upcoming L2 - Base

What is Account Abstraction?

Account Abstraction has been a major focus in the Ethereum developer community, aiming to enhance user experience when interacting with dApps.

It refers to treating smart contract wallets as first-class citizens instead of EOAs, combined with relaying infrastructure that allows third parties to execute transactions on behalf of users.

Why Account Abstraction will be a game changer for L2s

Account Abstraction solves the lack of a common standard for how smart contracts interact with dApps without requiring EOAs. Though meta-transactions have existed, adoption of smart contract wallets beyond multisigs has been minimal due to:

1. High gas costs of deploying wallets and sponsoring transactions.

2. Front-end complexity supporting both smart contract wallets and EOAs.

Base mitigates these challenges:

• As an L2, Base provides lower fees, making mass wallet deployment and sponsorship practical.
